Barrel Tracings

PDF

The changeover from the (a)-type to the (b)-type barrel hammers took place toward the end of 1955, and impressions with December 1955 or January 1956 dates could have been made by either the earlier or the later device.

In order to aid collectors to distinguish between them, the Bridger & Kay Cancellation Gauge may be used to measure the position of the lettering on a barrel impression, using the right-hand section of the gauge.

The spacing, laid upon a background of the B&K gauge, is then traced on a straight-line drawing of each barrel strike, resulting in the listing shown in this presentation. Further details may be found in the book Canada’s Barrel Postmarks. The tracings are available in the accompanying pdf.
